ICE HOUSE CULTURAL CENTER

History

In 1908, a facility was built to house the Consumer Ice Storage Co. to deliver ice to the Oak Cliff community. Southland Ice Co. soon bought out Consumer Ice. In the mid 1920's Southland evolved into the 7-11 convenience stores known nationally. Southland Ice Co. relocated years following to another facility. The ice plant was vacant and was purchased by the Sala family.

A lack of a cultural facility was identified in Oak Cliff. With the help of the assistant director of the Office of Cultural Affairs, a plan was implemented to begin the renovation for the Ice House Project. The Ice House officially opened its doors to the community in February 1997 to meet the artistic needs of the Oak Cliff community, with funding from Levi Strauss and the OCA. The Ice House Cultural Center currently houses the Ballet Folklorico Alegre and Ollimpaxqui, Cara Mia Theatre Co., the Oak Cliff Coalition for the Arts (OCCA), and the Ice House Art Gallery.

Contact Ollimpaxqui Ballet Academy at MexBallet@aol.com to find out about their ballet classes at the Ice House Cultural Center.
